Questions about histamine intolerance:

  • Why test for histamine intolerance?

Histamine intolerance can cause a whole host of problems throughout the body for about one per cent of the population. The symptoms are often vague enough that those affected are unable to identify the cause. A histamine intolerance test is the first step towards diagnosis and possibly a change in diet to alleviate your symptoms.

  • How does the histamine intolerance test work?

For the Histamine Intolerance test,a lancet is used to take a small blood sample from your fingertip. A few drops of blood are applied to a dry blood card, which is then sent by prepaid return envelope to a certified lab.

  • What do the results of the histamine intolerance test tell me?

The results report will tell you the concentration of the enzyme Diaminooxidase (DAO) in your blood, the enzyme which breaks down the histamine in your intestine. If your DAO value is too low, this may be an indication of histamine intolerance. The result report tells you whether your DAO value is within the normal range.

  • What recommendations will I receive after the histamine intolerance test?

In the result report for the histamine intolerance test, you will find a number of recommendations in addition to your test result. Among other things, you will learn how to avoid foods containing histamine, promote your intestinal health, optimize your vitamin and mineral intake and reduce your symptoms through these measures.

  • How does histamine intolerance occur?

Histamine is a messenger substance that occurs in the human body and is involved in blood formation and wound healing, among other things. The immune system also uses histamine to fight pathogens with inflammatory reactions.

We also consume histamines through our food. It is broken down in the intestine by enzymes, especially by diaminooxidase (DAO). If there is too little DAO in the intestine, the histamines cannot be broken down properly. The result: a histamine intolerance in which excess histamines may cause inflammation and discomfort throughout the entire body.

There are a number of possible causes for the imbalance between enzymes and histamines:

    - a weakened or diseased bowel, due to irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, Crohn's disease or intestinal ulcers
    - a deficiency of vitamins B6 or C as well as the mineral zinc
    - certain medications and alcohol

  • Symptoms of histamine intolerance?

The symptoms of histamine intolerance are reminiscent of allergic reactions and it's no wonder: During an allergic reaction, the body releases too much histamine, causing an inflammatory reaction. This is why histamine intolerance is often confused with allergies.

Typical symptoms of histamine intolerance are:

    - redness, itching and swelling on the skin
    - stomach and intestinal cramps, flatulence, diarrhea
    - runny nose, cough, asthma, difficulty swallowing
    - headache and dizziness— rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeat

If you suffer from any of these symptoms after eating, performing a histamine intolerance test is recommended. A special three-phase diet can confirm the suspicion.

  • Treatment of histamine intolerance?

For a histamine intolerance, it is crucial to eat a diet as low in histamines as possible. Histamines cannot be removed from foods by heating, freezing or washing. Only a change in nutrition helps: If the intestine only has to break down a small amount of histamines, the symptoms are alleviated.

    Additional Therapy measures are:

    - Promoting intenstinal health - probiotic food, a lot of fibre and little sugar support the activity of enzymes in the intestine.
    - Vitamins and minerals - sufficient amounts of Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and zinc help the intestine process histamines.
    - Medications for acute issues - Antihistamines and the active substance daosine can alleviate inflammatory reactions such as diarrhea temporarily.

  • What foods contain histamine?

Histamines occur in many foods. People with histamine intolerance should avoid foods that contain large amounts of the substance, especially:

    - alcoholic drinks such as red wine, champagne, prossecco, wheat beer, spirits stored in casks such as whisky and cognac
    - mature cheeses such as Parmesan, Swiss cheese, Alpine cheese, Camembert
    - cured, smoked and dried sausages and meat products
    - certain varieties of vegetables (spinach, tomato, avocado) and fruit (ripe banana, kiwi, strawberry, citrus)
    - chocolate and cocoa
